English Alive offers several exciting intensive English workshop options for the secondary schools to choose from. Each three day workshop is designed to increase fluency, improve writing skills, and enhance the students’ language confidence plus it gives them the chance to use their creativity. We strive to create an atmosphere of learning and fun while participating in our courses that directly result in positive learning outcomes.
English Alive brings language to life further by utilizing the latest tools in a practical and effective way that connects with our tech savvy teenagers. We make use of digital cameras, iPads, Macintosh laptops, and digital projection technology during our lessons and in the making of our student presentations and commercials. By employing these available tools we can provide instant feedback to our students thus improving their presentation skills and increasing their awareness of state of the art media technology.

Media Madness!
English Alive offers a three day intensive workshop that explores American popular culture as seen through the media. We introduce key concepts of media literacy to assist our students to think critically and to discern the media messages sent to them daily.
Students will listen to lectures, write, watch, role play, and discuss video clips from television commercials, TV shows, music, and films. The students will actively participate in small and large group discussions, games, and specific activities. At the culmination of the workshop each small group will write, perform and film for the class a commercial advertisement designed to promote an imaginary product. This course is tailored specifically for students to increase their fluency, improve listening skills, as well as providing them with the tools to understand and analyze the powerful images and vocabulary that make up our mass media culture.

English Alive offers a three day workshop that focuses on teenage culture in American High School. Our students will listen to lectures, write, watch, role play, and discuss video clips from commercials, TV shows, music, and films. The students will actively participate in small and large group discussions, games, and specific activities. At the culmination of the workshop each small group will write, perform, and film for the class a short skit dealing with a specified teen subject matter. This course is tailored for students to increase their fluency, improve listening skills, as well as exposing them to a different cultural perspective and the challenges that make up American teenage life.

Californication
English Alive offers a three day workshop that focuses on the rich and varied cultural landscape of California. Among some of the noteworthy subcultures we’ll examine are the surfers and skaters, the Valley phenomenon, hip hop, hippies, bikers, and lowrider culture. In addition we’ll explore the rich contributions that the African Americans, Hispanic and American Indian cultures have contributed to the Golden state. We’ll examine how each group has left their unique influence not only in the US, but in the greater world too.

The students will actively participate in small and large group discussions, games, and specific activities. American Indian Alive
A special project workshop that is unique to English Alive is American Indian Alive. This course is taught by Sharon Yazzie-Herbert who is a member of the Navajo Nation from the American Southwest. In this class we’ll explore Native American history and cultural traditions, as well as the challenges that these indigenous communities face today. Through our lessons we seek to dispel stereotypical myths and present American Indian culture with authenticity and respect.

Good Ole’ Rock ‘N’ Roll
This lively workshop brings language to life as we explore the roots of American rock ‘n’ roll. We’ll look, listen, and converse about the origins, the social and historical context that have influenced rock from blues and country to punk and heavy metal. Students will become familiar with landmark groups, artists, and movements that have lead the way to today’s popular music. In this course our students will listen to lectures and music clips, write, watch, role play, and discuss video clips from TV shows, concerts, and films. The students will actively participate in small and large group discussions, games, and specific activities. At the culmination of the workshop each small group will write, perform, and film, a short presentation dealing with a musical subject matter. This course is tailored specifically for students to increase their fluency, improve listening skills, as well as exposing them to the evolution of good ole’ rock ’n’ roll.
